An 84-year-old pilot, identified as Dieter S. Schmidt from Springboro, tragically lost his life following a plane crash in Warren County yesterday afternoon. WCPO reports that the Ohio Highway State Patrol responded to the Caesar Creek Soaring Club incident near Waynesville, Ohio, around 1:15 p.m.
Initial investigations revealed that Schmidt was in a Schleicher ASH 26E glider towed by a 1976 Piper PA-23-235 fixed-wing single-engine plane during takeoff. Subsequently, for reasons not yet determined, the glider separated from the tow plane and crashed onto the Caesar Creek Gliderport runway, as stated in a preliminary investigation. He was pronounced dead at the scene, confirming the harrowing gravity of the accident.
The incident is currently under the scrutiny of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The investigative body was called in after the sailplane crash led to Schmidt's death. According to WLWT, the fatal event unfolded at 1:21 p.m. on Elbon Road, and it involved a glider detaching from its tow at a dangerously low altitude, resulting in its descent to the ground, where it flipped upon impact.
Caesar Creek Soaring Club members expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. "I’m heartbroken," Brian Stoops, a member of the Club, told WDTN 2 News. "He was a longtime member and a friend. It’s just devastating." The FAA, confirming only the pilot was aboard the aircraft at the time, identified the downed aircraft as a Schleicher ASH 26 glider, with further details of the investigation to be managed by the NTSB, in conjunction with the FAA and local agencies.
