The streets of Phoenix are set for an expansion, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) gears up to initiate the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) Improvement Project starting Aug. 9. This substantial infrastructural endeavor will encompass the addition of new lanes and alterations to interchanges over an 8-mile stretch, according to the ADOT. As ADOT plans to broaden the freeway between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive in Chandler and Gilbert, motorists should prepare for the imminent closures and detours.

A significant investment of $200 million has been allocated for the project to augment two travel lanes in each direction between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road. Scheduled to run troubled motorists amok until 5 a.m. Monday, eastbound Loop 202 will be closed from Loop 101 to Arizona Avenue starting from 10 p.m. Friday through the weekend, Aug. 12, as reported by the ADOT. With such expansion comes the necessary evils, including the widening of bridges and revamping of on- and off-ramps, adjusting them to fit the freeway's soon-to-be expanded girth across the next two-and-a-half years.

As construction crescendoes, individual on- and off-ramps will experience closer for around 60 days each, to ensure they're seamlessly integrated into the widened freeway. Maricopa County residents can look back at the foresight of Proposition 400, the dedicated half-cent sales tax they approved back in 2004, which partially funds this project.

For those interested in probing further or perhaps plotting their detours in advance, more information about the Loop 202 project can be found on the ADOT website.
