Broward County school bus drivers are conducting test drives and reviewing procedures in anticipation of the new school year's start on Monday. This preparation aims to ensure a smooth transition for students returning to class, according to the WSVN news release.

These preparations include practice runs and additional training, taking place at a bus depot in Davie, where bus operators like Magnus Meekins test their vehicles and familiarize themselves with the routes they will soon drive, who enjoys his job as a school bus operator and is looking forward to returning to work after a summer break that he said was a much-needed respite but now is eager to get back behind the wheel of his "yellow office" and get to know the new faces he'll be transporting this year, as stated in the WSVN news release.

Sharae Blackshure, another veteran bus driver participating in the dry runs, highlighted the importance of the exercise, saying "We’re going to have a lot of fun this year," emphasizing that the day was devoted to "pre-tripping, learning our routes" to make sure everything from the stop signs to under-the-hood mechanics meet safety standards before she would see "their faces on Monday," as reported in the Local10 website.

Both school districts in Broward and Miami-Dade counties are still looking to hire more bus drivers, with Broward needing about 80 more to cover route substitutions and any callouts, and in Miami-Dade County there is still hiring happening to accommodate emergencies, retirements, not to mention the desire to reduce the number of drivers working double routes.

In preparation for the first school day, parents are advised to be punctual and cautious at bus stops. Dr. Simone Clowers, Broward Schools Transportation Director, recommends arriving with children at the bus stop "10 minutes before the bus time" and waiting on the sidewalk for safety. She also urges parents to familiarize themselves with bus stop locations before the school year starts, as mentioned by the WSVN news release.

With initiatives to enhance safety and readiness, including the addition of 60 electric buses to the fleet, Broward County officials confirm that all routes will be staffed for the start of school. They also invite individuals with routing concerns or those interested in driving positions to attend an information session this Saturday.
