As the school year commences in Broward County, students are returning to an environment with heightened security measures designed to ensure their safety. According to a report by Local 10, metal detectors have been installed at the entrances of public high schools, mandating every student to pass through them daily. "The goal is to keep weapons out and keep students safe," the district stated.
Adjusting to the new security protocol, students and personnel acclimatize to the metal detectors. However, the district assures that measures are in place to expedite the process. In contrast to last year, students must keep mobile devices in airplane mode or turned off throughout the entire school day, a shift from the previous policy that allowed use during non-instructional times.
In addition to increased security, new academic opportunities are being presented to pupils in order to broaden their knowledge. An event at South Plantation High School teased some of these novel initiatives. A spokesperson for the school district shared with 7News, "The majority of the feedback said that this will really make students feel more comfortable in their learning environments."
Culinary programs are being integrated into six middle schools, offering students hands-on experiences with food safety and science in upgraded kitchens. As reported by 7News, culinary arts teacher Raphine Rachel emphasized, "The students need to learn how to incorporate working together in teams, creating fantastic opportunities and great meals, as well as being able to gain those skills to help mom and dad at home."
