Starting August 13 and stretching until August 20, several municipalities are getting proactive in the war against mosquitoes. If you're living in or around the Broward Municipal Services District, Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lazy Lake, Lauderhill, Oakland Park, Tamarac, or Wilton Manors, expect to see trucks rolling out during the night hours, armed and ready, according to a recent announcement from the Public Works Department's Mosquito Control Section.
Now, to the curious minds out there worrying about the impact on their beloved pets or the bees buzzing in their gardens, breathe easy. The county guarantees that the chosen weapon against these disease carriers, VectoBac WDG, is a friend to us and a foe to them. What we've got here is an eco-friendly agent based on Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), a bacteria that's all-natural and breaks down without a fuss. This larvicide has been given the green light by the Organic Materials Review Institute and carries a seal of approval from none other than the US Environmental Protection Agency.
The county has an ongoing partnership with the Florida Department of Health and Code Enforcement to keep mosquito numbers down. With 31 municipalities within its jurisdiction, collaboration is key. Time to survey your domains, and drain the darn standing water in buckets, tires, and your kids' forgotten toys. Ring up 311 or fill out the online Mosquito Service Request Form to get the cavalry headed to your corner.
