As Labor Day weekend ushered in and capped off the busiest summer travel season seen since pre-pandemic times, the Chicago Department of Aviation braced itself to welcome nearly 1.75 million passengers to O'Hare and Midway International Airports. According to initial airline projections, the travel surge represents an 8.9% increase compared to last year. Mayor Brandon Johnson conveyed his enthusiasm about the influx of travelers, highlighting new amenities at both airports and the importance of Chicago’s labor movement history.
Specifically, O'Hare is to see one of its busiest weekends in history with an estimated 1.44 million passengers, which is a skyrocketing 10.2% increase over the previous year. "Chicago just welcomed tens of thousands of visitors for the Democratic National Convention, and this Labor Day weekend, we are excited to celebrate with even more visitors from across the world," Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement obtained by the Chicago Department of Aviation. The airport expects its peak to hit on Monday, Sept. 2, with over 270,000 travelers bustling through.
Midway isn't far behind, equipped to handle more than 306,000 people, marking a 3% rise from 2023. Here too, the busiest day is projected to perfectly align with a wave of 58,000 travelers on Friday, Aug. 30. Chicago's CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee lauds the efforts of CDA employees who have consistently provided top-notch service, especially during such peak times, ensuring the traveling experience is as smooth as can be for those circulating through during the holiday weekend.
The draw to the City during this period isn't solely pinned to the airport's traffic control. Cultural lures like the Chicago Jazz Festival and North Coast Music Festival also contribute to the increased holiday bustle. In preparation, travelers were advised of various tips to prevent traffic congestion: taking public transit, utilizing 'Kiss n' Fly' drop-offs, and waiting in dedicated Cell Phone Lots for arriving passengers. Terminal upgrades, like the ElevateT3 development and new garage construction at Terminal 5, have also been highlighted for passenger awareness, ensuring minimal disruptions and informing them of the ongoing expansions and improvements set to be completed in the coming years.
Amidst this surge, travelers' convenience remained paramount with recommendations to steer clear of congestion via public transport and efficient airport drop-off strategies. With more on the horizon like the $300 million investment in Terminal 3 upgrades and a brand-new garage for Terminal 5, O'Hare embraces the present challenge with an eye firmly fixed on a future set to elevate travel experience to unprecedented heights.
