Tensions were high at Cookeville High School on Tuesday morning when a 9th-grade student proclaimed to have a firearm, putting the school on lockdown. As reported by WSMV, during an English class at approximately 9:40 a.m., the student announced, "I have a gun in my backpack," prompting the teacher to activate the classroom's panic button. The move swiftly summoned the school's resource officer to the scene.

The sheriff's office was quick to respond, detaining and searching the student, only to find no firearm. Students at Cookeville High School experienced a brief but intense disruption to their school day before the lockdown was lifted just before 10 a.m. and the school resumed to normal operations, as the WKRN detailed. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has since confirmed the student's custody and charged him with a threat of mass violence on school property.

Despite the terrifying claims, all reports indicated that the student did not possess a weapon. In line with FOX 17, after the lockdown was lifted every student was accounted for and deemed safe by school officials. The scare led to a thorough investigation, with the incident striking a chord in the ongoing national conversation around school safety and gun violence.

Following the unsettling event, Putnam County's Juvenile Detention Facility became the temporary holding place for the student, whose identity has not been disclosed due to their minor status. Details on the student's motives or the conditions leading up to the threat have yet to be released.
