Two people were shot and hospitalized Monday evening at Brookwood Terrace Apartments on South Rutherford Boulevard in Murfreesboro, and as of the latest update, no suspect has been identified or arrested. Murfreesboro Police reported that the shooting happened shortly after 6:15 p.m., and the extent of the victims' injuries remains unknown. The complex's main entrance was blocked off until further notice as investigators worked the scene.
Detectives are working to obtain surveillance footage and identify a suspect, according to WSMV, which first reported the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not released details about a motive or how the two victims may be connected to whoever opened fire. Brookwood Terrace is a 122-unit income-restricted apartment community built in 2009 and managed by First Cumberland Properties under the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program, according to First Cumberland Properties.
A Corridor With a Recent History of Violence
The shooting is the latest violent incident to hit the South Rutherford Boulevard corridor. In April, Murfreesboro Police arrested two men on Class B aggravated robbery charges after an armed robbery at gunpoint at Murfreesboro Tobacco and Vape on the same roadway, a case in which investigators leaned on the department's Real Time Crime Center technology. And in July, police arrested a 21-year-old suspect on South Rutherford Boulevard who was wanted for aggravated burglary and witness retaliation tied to an earlier shooting case.
The Brookwood Terrace shooting also comes just two weeks after a murder-suicide at Saddlebrook Apartments elsewhere in Murfreesboro left two men dead on July 28. Taken together, the two incidents mark a second multi-person shooting at a Murfreesboro apartment complex within roughly two weeks. Murfreesboro Police operate a Real Time Crime Center equipped with automated license plate readers, public safety cameras, and gunshot detection technology, and the department expanded its staffing into evening shifts in late 2025 to support active investigations, according to WGNS Radio. Those tools are likely to play a central role as detectives work to obtain footage from the Brookwood Terrace shooting and track down whoever is responsible.
Brookwood Terrace sits along a stretch of South Rutherford Boulevard served by Murfreesboro public transit and is zoned for Black Fox Elementary School, Whitworth-Buchanan Middle School, and Riverdale High School, putting the shooting within a neighborhood with a steady flow of families and students. Citywide, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation data reported for Murfreesboro showed 5 homicides in 2024, a 62 percent drop from 2023, though firearms were used in every one of those cases.
Potential Charges If a Suspect Is Identified
No charges have been filed because no suspect has been named, but Tennessee law lays out steep penalties for anyone eventually connected to the shooting. Under state law, aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon or causing serious bodily injury is a Class C felony carrying 3 to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to attorney May McKinney.
Separately, Tennessee law imposes a standalone Class C felony charge with a mandatory minimum six-year prison sentence for possessing or employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, a sentence that must be served at 100 percent without probation and consecutively to any underlying felony conviction, per attorneys Freeman & Fuson. For now, the investigation into Monday's shooting remains active, and Murfreesboro Police have not said whether the two victims are expected to survive their injuries.
