A fiery scene unfolded on Interstate 24 yesterday afternoon as a FedEx tractor-trailer became engulfed in flames, prompting an emergency response that closed down the eastbound lanes. The incident occurred near the Joe B. Jackson Parkway at mile marker 84, as reported by WSMV. The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office swiftly acted to reroute the heavy interstate traffic, suggesting commuters find alternate paths to reach their destinations.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation first recorded the fire shortly after 3 p.m., necessitating a complete blockage of the eastbound traffic flow. Deputies from the RCSO directed vehicles off the interstate via Joe B. Jackson Pkwy, while traffic also had the option to detour onto Highway 41-70. Details on whether there were any injuries as a result of the incident were not immediately available, as per WGNS Radio.
Firefighting teams worked diligently to extinguish the truck blaze, attending to the contents afterward by placing them on the roadside to mitigate the risk of further ignition. This effort was captured by T-DOT cameras and indicates the first responders’ commitment to preventing the incident from escalating further. The source of the sparks that ignited the FedEx vehicle has not been provided in available reports.
As the afternoon waned into early evening, clearance operations progressed, allowing the wreckage to be removed and a return to normality on the road. WGNS Radio noted that traffic resumed by the evening, with the formerly chaotic interstate segment now cleared of debris and open to vehicles. Despite the potential for major disruptions and damage, the containment of the fire and the subsequent cleanup proved efficient, curtailing any prolonged impact on the local transit system.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department recommended an alternate route via U.S. Highway 41/70 Manchester Highway south, and drivers could rejoin the interstate at the Buchanan Road exit 89, as per Wilson County Source. Coordination between the various departments ensured that the impact of the incident was minimized and normal traffic patterns were restored as promptly as conditions allowed.
