As Florida's state primary inches closer, election clerks in Collier and Escambia counties are stepping up to counter a spreading rumor. A piece of misinformation alleging that ballots with any additional markings will be invalidated has become a source of concern for voters. NBC Miami reports that clerks are actively clarifying, that such claims found on social media are without merit.
The false assertion, which suggests election workers might disqualify votes by marking ballots, has been circulating on the internet since at least 2020. According to AP News, this is the kind of misinformation that could potentially undermine voter confidence, which, as polls indicate, is already at an all-time low.
Election officials have identified the claims as inaccurate and emphasized that the veracity of the voting process remains intact. The rumors appear to leverage fears stirred up by unspecified allegations, suggesting election meddling. This false information has been seen in various forms online, as both copied-and-pasted texts and social media screenshots, allegedly from a "poll manager."
Despite the spread of this claim, Escambia County Clerk Robert Bender assured voters that any writing on a ballot would unlikely affect its validity. "We’ve had people write paragraphs to us on their ballot," Bender told NBC Miami. "Our scanners are looking for marks in certain areas. And so, if there’s a mark in a bubble, then that’s how the vote gets assigned to the voters." He also noted the importance of addressing such rumors, especially with the primary looming.
Actions to debunk this misinformation are not limited to online statements. Election clerks are ensuring that their local constituencies have access to the truth, urging them to reach out to their local election supervisor for verified information related to the voting process. This collaborative effort by election officials in Florida reflects a commitment to uphold the electoral system's integrity and to reassure the public that each vote is counted as intended.
