Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has repeatedly voiced his opposition to state funding being poured into sports stadium projects, has shifted gears by allotting state funds to a project associated with the Inter Miami soccer team. According to a report by WSVN, despite his usual stance, DeSantis announced a state grant of $8 million to Miami-Dade County, specifically intended for road improvements and infrastructure around the venue where Inter Miami's new stadium is set to rise.

This financial move follows the decision by Inter Miami to sign football luminary Lionel Messi, an action which has boosted the team's profile on both local and international stages. Addressing the media at the team's temporary digs in Fort Lauderdale, DeSantis justified the spend by distinguishing infrastructure improvements from stadium funding proper, stating, "Our role, as state government, is not to give money to a team, but to create an environment where everyone can be successful." According to an NBC Miami account, DeSantis further argued that the envisioned road work is not just about supporting the soccer games but how it will bolster a new business district, spark construction jobs, relieve future traffic, and potentially amp up tourism.

The earmarked $8 million stems from the state's Job Growth Grant Fund, highlighted in the state budget to the tune of $75 million for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The sum directed towards the Miami Freedom Park project, a 25,000-seat stadium in proximity to Miami International Airport, marks the fifth time DeSantis has utilized the fund this fiscal year. Critics, however, remain skeptical about such public expenditures. J.C. Bradbury, an economics professor and past president of the North American Association of Sports Economists, conveyed his doubts to WSVN, insisting, "This probably isn’t the most deserving infrastructure project in the state."

Amid these developments, the stadium build has encountered delays, with Inter Miami now scheduled to prolong their stay at the current ground, Chase Stadium, through the 2025 season. DeSantis did not entertain questions during the announcement, leaving open queries as to the scope of the project's budget and the significance of the state's contribution. While DeSantis champions the benefits of the infrastructure investment, Bradbury's view holds a poignant counter: "With every new sports stadium, they always claim huge economic impacts. They always say this one will be different. It never is."
