A Florida man, identified as Stephen Gilbert, aged 27, faces a felony charge of intimidation after making an online threat to burn down a Planned Parenthood clinic in Port St. Lucie. Gilbert's alleged threat, posted on an unspecified social media platform, caught the eye of the clinic's security director who in turn alerted law enforcement and the FBI, leading to Gilbert's arrest, according to WSVN.
As reported by WPTV, Gilbert, who has a history of violent offenses in the state of Florida, stated in his post, "My goal for this week is to find the nearest abortion clinic and burn it to the ground. #ProLife," spotlighting the turbulent intersection of online incitement and real-world consequences. Sgt. Dominick Mesiti of the Port St. Lucie Police Department warned against making such threats online, emphasizing that they bear weight and potential for real-world legal repercussions, further highlighted by this arrest during a joint collaborative effort between local police and federal agents.
No tangible evidence indicating Gilbert was equipped to carry out the act was found upon a search of his residence, however; law enforcement found the post itself, coupled with Gilbert's prior criminal transgressions—including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a first responder—sufficient for an arrest. The action taken reflects law enforcement's stringent stance on online threats, with Sgt. Mesiti remarking, "Based on his criminal history and his comments, that's why we made the arrest," which he told WSVN. "We believe that he could be a potential danger, yes."
