San Diego's own Citizen Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) welcomes Brett Kalina, a former FBI special agent, as its new Executive Officer starting September 3. This announcement came directly from the mouthpiece of CLERB's Chairperson, MaryAnne Pintar. The board opts for a seasoned professional with a track record in high-stakes crime-solving to bolster their investigative clout.

With a 20-year tenure in complex, high-profile cases varying from narcotics to violent crime, Kalina is poised to properly harness his deep investigative know-how to advance the aims of CLERB. Pintar emphasized Kalina's pertinent background, saying, "Brett has extensive experience with complex, high-profile investigations involving narcotics trafficking, violent crimes, complicated forensic evidence, and diverse communities," according to an announcement by the County News Center.

CLERB has carved out its role as the investigative body into complaints against County officers and incidents leading to death or serious bodily harm involving law enforcement. Tasked with nudging policies in the right direction, it aims to better police performance, uphold equity, and potentially save lives.

Not merely content to bring his investigative acumen to bear, Kalina is a champion of diversity and inclusion. He previously helmed the Bureau of Equality for a five-year stint, where he was instrumental in promoting diversity and inclusivity in policing. "Kalina has been recognized for nurturing equal opportunity in the workplace and for his work to promote diversity and inclusivity in policing," said Pintar, highlighting his tenure as President of the Bureau of Equality, as stated by County News Center.

Kalina's educational portfolio includes a juris doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law, supplemented by a bachelor's degree from the same institution.
