Broward County has leveled up its voting infrastructure with the grand opening of a new facility for the Supervisor of Elections. The center, dubbed state-of-the-art, is nestled at 4650 NW 21st Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, and aims to provide voters a more secure and accessible voting environment.
Costing $103 million, the facility was brought to life courtesy of the County Commission funding, and features up-to-date voting technology, ample office space, and bolstered security features. Open for early voting, the center is also a drop-off point for Vote-By-Mail Ballots. With doors ajar from 9AM to 5PM on weekdays, residents can swing by to register to vote or update their voting details.
In a statement obtained by the official news release, Broward Mayor Nan H. Rich expressed the significance of the new facility, "This new state-of-the-art-facility is truly cause for celebration. It will allow us to officially carry out the election process and ensures transparency. It demonstrates Broward County's commitment to the democratic process, and voting is a cornerstone of our democracy," as mentioned by the Broward County commission.
The 155,000 square foot space is a revamp and extension of an existing 60,000 square feet building and includes a new operations warehouse, spread across approximately 95,000 square feet. A secured atrium, with a vast video display, allows the public to monitor election processes, while the Transparency Corridor, encasing the ballot operations area, offers windows for the public to witness the ballot life cycle. All this, designed with an eye on sustainability and resilience, the facility is anticipating LEED Gold certification and is equipped with a photovoltaic panel array expected to power about 25% of yearly energy needs.
