Residents in certain areas of Fort Lauderdale, brace yourselves for a slight alteration in your tap water's appearance. Starting Monday, through August 20, the Peele-Dixie Water Treatment Plant will be undergoing necessary maintenance, which means it will be taken offline temporarily. During this period, those living south of Broward Boulevard will be served by the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant, a shift that could lead to a change in water color, according to the City of Fort Lauderdale.
The source of the color change is simply a difference in treatment methods. Peele-Dixie typically employs a sophisticated reverse osmosis process, whereas Fiveash uses lime softening, a different kind of process that can affect water appearance. City representatives want to reassure residents that despite the visual difference, the water is perfectly safe to drink and remains compliant with all primary drinking water standards.
While such reassurances are given, some locals might still raise an eyebrow at their faucets. For those with concerns or in need of further clarification, the city's Customer Service Center has opened lines for inquiries at 954-828-8000. They're prepared to field questions about the maintenance and ensure that, the public's mind can be put at ease.
