A tragic turn of events unfolded on Indy's east side as four firefighters were hospitalized after their fire truck overturned while responding to a nearby fatal traffic accident yesterday morning. According to 21Alive News, the incident took place at the intersection of East 30th Street and North Hawthorne Lane just before 11:30 am. The firefighters were en route to an earlier crash involving a speeding driver who fatally collided with a parked semi at Massachusetts Avenue and E. 30th Street.
As the details continued to emerge, FOX59 provided accounts from witnesses who saw the chaos ensue. "A friend of mine was running through the house saying, ‘There’s a firetruck upside down! There’s a firetruck upside down!’ I got up and looked out the window and there’s a firetruck upside down,” David Davis told the news outlet. Another witness, John Galada, added, "When I did, I went up to the top of the bridge, and that’s when I noticed the firetrucks coming from this direction."
The WTHR report further clarified the events leading up to the accident. IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith states that the firefighters were trying to avoid slowed traffic and a “wide load” that was being escorted by Indiana State Police officers. While one firetruck managed to navigate around the obstacles successfully, the latter did not, leading to the truck overturning.
The condition of the hospitalized firefighters has not been disclosed at this time, nor has the name of the deceased victim from the initial crash. The series of accidents has rattled the local community, causing an upheaval in the daily rhythm of traffic and safety operations in the neighborhood. As the investigation into the cause of both crashes continues, the IFD and local law enforcement will likely review their response protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
