Hialeah Gardens is taking a stand against speeders in school zones with a new initiative designed to keep children safe. In collaboration with Altumint, a traffic enforcement company, officials aim to crack down on drivers disregarding speed limits near educational institutions. "We have seen an increase in our motorists and our violators that tend to pass the school buses," Miami-Dade Police Detective Angel Rodriguez told WSVN. This partnership follows concerning trends in traffic violations, including nearly 11,500 school bus-related offenses recorded since the beginning of the school year, as per Miami-Dade's most recent findings.
The issue in Hialeah Gardens is particularly alarming, with 565 reported violations occurring in a high school zone and 340 in other school zones in a single day. Vehicles that sped through these zones did so while low-speed flashing lights were active, signaling an overt neglect for student safety. According to Local 10, Altumint is managing the city's visual technology and handling the citation process. In conjunction, Virginia-based BusPatrol America is ensuring that stop signs on 668 school buses in Miami-Dade are enforced, with fines reaching up to $225 for violations.
The technology used in this initiative includes AI-equipped trailers that detect and capture the license plates of vehicles exceeding 11 miles per hour over the speed limit. The data is then sent to the DMV and subsequently to the police for review. "We send it to the police department for their review," an Altumint representative explained, pinpointing the integral role of law enforcement in issuing penalties. After a 30-day warning period, culprits could face a $100 fine for speeding in these critical safety zones, as per WSVN. Parents and community members are showing support for these measures aimed at protecting schoolchildren. "Anything that helps protect the kids obviously I think is a good thing," said Adrian Ardila, a father of a Hialeah Gardens Middle School student, confirming the community's prioritization of youth safety.
