The City of Hollywood has announced the initiation of their Annual Breakpoint Chlorination, colloquially known as the "Free Chlorination.” Within their Water Line Flushing Program, which is slated to begin on August 19, continuing through September 22, according to a recent statement from the City of Hollywood official website.
During this period, residents may experience a change in water taste and odor, as the water treatment process switches from chloramines to free chlorination. Temporary cloudiness or discoloration in water is expected due to the sediments being flushed out by Utility Staff, who will intentionally open hydrants across the city. The flushing is set to occur in the late hours from approximately 8 p.m. to midnight, aiming to minimize inconvenience while demand for water is low, as reported by City of Hollywood.
The importance of this system maintenance is emphasized by the removal of accumulated sediments during the flushing process, which can enhance the overall quality of the water supply. Although cloudiness might be a visible byproduct, it has been clarified by the city that this does not pose a risk to health or safety. The continuation of the maintenance will see the flushing program extend potentially an additional two weeks following the end of free chlorination, slated to last through October 3.
Special attention is required for specific groups, as after September 22, when the city discontinues free chlorination, the methods for removing free chlorine will not be as effective as before. This is particularly critical for businesses with fish and shellfish tanks, and individuals using kidney dialysis machines, who need to test and adjust for chloramines. Questions and concerns can be directed to Luis Montoya, Public Utilities Manager, or Jorge Marin, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent at 954.967.4230, options as provided by the city's announcement.
