San Diego's frontline against counterfeit sportswear has notched a significant win this month, as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego seized a hoard of fake goods worth a hefty sum. Special agents clamped down on pirated merchandise from the San Diego Padres and Manchester United F.C., two bastions of baseball and soccer. A haul of over 1,600 items with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of more than $143,000 was confiscated in two separate operations.

In a joint venture with the Padres, HSI's Commercial Fraud Group made off with 1,163 counterfeit items, valued at an MSRP of $86,000, as reported by HSI San Diego. Over the pond, in coordination with HSI London and the English Premier League’s football giant, Manchester United, an additional 521 counterfeit items worth an MSRP of $57,000 were captured. "HSI San Diego is committed to working with industries, such as MLB and the English Premier League’s Manchester United, in maintaining the integrity of their brands", HSI San Diego Special Agent in Charge Chris Davis articulated.

This crackdown is a fragment of the broader Operation Team Player, an annual effort by the IPR Center working in concert with U.S. sports leagues. This initiative aims to thwart the flow of counterfeit sports merchandise to unsuspecting fans. From February 2023 to February 2024, around 94,000 bogus sports-related wares, valued at an estimated $28.1 million, have been intercepted.

The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, formed by the joint coordination of federal and international law enforcement, the academic world, and the private sector, has staunchly battled intellectual property theft for over twenty years. The center emphasizes initiatives that preserve innovation, uphold trade laws, and guard public health and economic prosperity against the pitfalls of counterfeit merchandise.
