An Indianapolis man is facing up to 12 years in prison after being charged with leaving the scene of a deadly hit-and-run. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Zo Thuama, allegedly struck 28-year-old Jeanclaude Lubunga on Stop 11 Road late Friday night and fled without providing support or contacting officials, as reported by FOX59.
According to details collated from the police account, the victim, Lubunga, had been part of a group purportedly harassing a couple before the tragic incident. A witness described a male urging Lubunga to walk away from the altercation, moments before he was struck by Thuama's vehicle. Further investigation allowed police to use license plate readers to track down the Honda CRV that matched pieces left at the crime scene. A statement obtained by WTHR indicated that the detective on the case was shown the damaged vehicle by Thuama himself.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the fatal crash around 11 p.m. that night. They found Lubunga's body and immediately started investigating. Reports indicate that Thuama "just kept driving" after the collision, showing a disregard for human life. A warrant was issued for Thuama's arrest after he admitted to hitting Lubunga in an interview with police, as reported by FOX59.
Thuama faces serious legal consequences. The details of the hit-and-run are still under investigation, and authorities are asking the public for any additional information. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department or call 317-262-TIPS, as reported by WRTV.
