A pedestrian was struck and subsequently killed by a Brightline train in Deerfield Beach, according to Broward County officials. The incident, which occurred near the 1500 block of South Dixie Highway alongside the FEC railroad tracks, was responded to by Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The ordeal caused Northeast 54th Street to temporarily block at Dixie Highway. Local authorities are actively trying to thoroughly investigate to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic crash. WSVN reports show aerial footage with the scene cordoned off and several BSO vehicles present alongside the halted Brightline train. The identity of the individual pronounced dead has not yet been publicly released.
According to CBS 12, which has confirmed the incident, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the site. The BSO's traffic homicide unit has taken charge of the investigation as they sifted through the evidence and assembled a timeline of events that ended in a fatality.
BSO deputies are trying to bring closure to the case by investigating how and why the person ended up on the tracks. Officials are urging anyone with information on the accident to come forward as they continue their meticulous investigation. These fatalities have occurred often on the Brightline train service, prompting concerns about pedestrian safety and the necessity of heightened safety precautions near train crossings.
