Tragedy struck Lake County, Florida, after an exchange of gunfire left a deputy dead and two other officers wounded. Master Deputy Sheriff Bradley Michael Link, 28, was identified as the officer who died in what Sheriff Peyton Grinnell called an "ambush shooting." The distressing news came following an incident that occurred Friday night in the province of rural Eustis. According to CBS12, the deputies had initially responded to a report of a disturbance at around 8 p.m.

Details from a statement issued on the Lake County Sheriff's Office Facebook page revealed that Link was heroically serving his community when the events unfolded. After a report of a disturbance, two deputies arrived on scene to quickly become confronted by a forcefully breached door. Inside, "there was a lot of gunfire," Grinnell said, leading to one deputy to become fatally trapped and another to have to retreat.

As further officers arrived, they attempted to form a team to rescue the trapped deputy. However, they were met with what Grinnell described as "a hail of gunfire," causing additional injuries. While one deputy received a shoulder wound and remained in stable condition, another was struck multiple times in the armpit, groin, and stomach areas, and was undergoing surgery in "serious/critical" condition. Sheriff Grinnell recounted that SWAT team members were needed to tear apart the home with special equipment to secure entry and retrieve Deputy Link.

In the ensuing chaos, two suspects were found dead, and a third was wounded when police stormed the home. A total of three suspects were involved in the initial ambush, with Grinnell confirming that the events were indeed an ambush. The Law enforcement had no prior indication that the situation they were walking into bore such potential for violence, with the sheriff stating that the house had no history of violent crime. Grinnell told AP News that after securing the scene, officials found multiple firearms in the home, ranging from long guns to handguns.

Deputy Link, who had served in the Army reserves before joining the sheriff's office, was remembered by Sheriff Grinnell for his quick integration into the department family and his dedicated service to the community. "Brad, quickly became part of our family and faithfully served our citizens with courage and zeal," said Grinnell, noting that Link's impact was profound and that his loss would not be forgotten.
