A cyclist incurred critical injuries late Saturday night in a hit-and-run accident in Lake Worth Beach, according to law enforcement officials. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office reported that the crash took place around 11:50 p.m., when a van traveling south on South C Street collided with the cyclist, who was heading west on 1st Avenue South. CBS12 provided details on the incident, noting that the cyclist did not come to a halt at the intersection's stop sign, thus moving into the van's trajectory.
The collision resulted in the cyclist, a 37-year-old man, being knocked to the ground and subsequently run over by the involved vehicle. The driver of the van opted to flee the scene without providing assistance or identifying themselves. Injured, the cyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is being treated for his critical injuries. WPBF echoed information on the mishap, specifying that the vehicle in question has yet to be identified.
The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident and is seeking information from any potential witnesses. The authorities are also reviewing to ascertain if surveillance footage from the area can aid in identifying the hit-and-run driver. Anyone with information related to this incident has been urged to contact the PBSO or the Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County.
This latest hit-and-run adds to a disturbing trend of such traffic incidents within the region, sparking renewed calls for increased safety measures for cyclists on the road. Community advocates plea for more stringent enforcement of traffic regulations, as well as the implementation of better street lighting and cyclist-friendly road designs, to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies. Authorities remind residents that fleeing the scene of an accident involving injury is a serious crime, and are pressing witnesses to step forward with any relevant information to help bring the responsible party to justice.
