A tragic sequence of events unfolded late Wednesday evening when a Layton man was fatally shot by police outside his home. The man, identified as a 59-year-old, had been within his residence armed and in a state of distress, threatening self-harm. Concerned for his safety, his wife contacted the authorities, prompting their arrival on the scene.
According to FOX 13, police were able to escort the woman from the home safely while crisis negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation. The man, however, communicated to officers, an intent to provoke a confrontation. In reporting the incident, Sgt. Lyman of the Layton Police detailed that during dialogues with the individual, he "made statements that indicated he intended on forcing a confrontation with officers," as obtained by KSL TV.
The situation escalated when a gunshot was heard from within the home, though the direction and target of the shot remained undetermined. Not long after, the man confronted officers while allegedly brandishing a rifle and a handgun, as stated by Lyman. Police responded with lethal force, and despite immediate life-saving efforts by the officers, the man succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Holy Cross Hospital in critical condition.
The Davis County Critical Incident Investigative Protocol Team is now leading an inquiry into the incident, during which, no officers were reportedly harmed. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases, as per ABC4. The identity of the man and further specifics regarding the situation are yet to be disclosed to the public.
