In a decisive move to tackle adolescent mental health woes, the Main Library has unveiled a series of workshops crafted with teens in mind. These sessions are intended to shine a spotlight on the importance of mental well-being, by equipping young people with the knowledge to recognize mental illness symptoms and furnishing them with practical coping techniques.
The series, presented in a straightforward, no-frills manner, launches on Monday, September 9 from 6 to 7 pm with "Ending The Silence," facilitated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This opening event is designed to initiate candid discussions about mental health among teens, and their parents. According to the library's announcement, the session promises to be an impactful presentation, committed to breaking the stigma and silence surrounding mental illnesses.
Following the kickoff, the library has slated a workshop for the following Monday, September 16, which gauges the intersection of stress relief and creativity. During this hour-long session, participants will have the opportunity to create their personal fidget toys, which double as tactile tools for managing stress and maintaining focus.
Yoga's benefits for mental serenity take center stage on Monday, September 23, as yoga instructor Ryanne Burnett walks participants through the practice's soothing effects on the psyche. This hands-on workshop will include a guided yoga session, allowing attendees to experience the tranquility it fosters, first-hand.
The endeavor continues at Red Mountain Library on Saturday, October 12 from 1 to 3 pm, where the Blossom Project draws from BLOOM365's encouragement to promote positive, healthy interpersonal relationships. Aimed at teens aged 12-18, this peer-led workshop focuses on empowering youth to discern and sidestep controlling, abusive, and violent behaviors in their myriad forms.
For those unable to attend the workshops, the library has a cornucopia of resources on topics ranging from mindfulness to self-care. These materials are an accessible starting point for anyone looking to support their own, or a loved one's, mental health journey.
