A pedestrian walking in the shadowed stillness of 8800 South State Street in Sandy was the subject of a harrowing incident, finding himself struck not once but twice by separate vehicles early Friday morning. The man, donned in dark clothes which perhaps rendered him less visible against the backdrop of night, was first hit by a southbound car around 1:30 a.m. and then, in a cruel twist of fate, by another vehicle while witnesses were moving to his aid. He was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition.
First responders arriving on the scene were greeted by drivers and witnesses who had remained to cooperate with the investigation, an investigation that, up until now, is devoid of suggestions of impairment from either driver, according to ABC4. The extent of injuries sustained by the man was critical, but specifics are unreported, they are veiled in the uncertainty that too often accompanies such tragedies.
With Sandy Street's night now bearing the weight of a violent incident, officers dove into the investigative process. A team of detectives was called to piece together the series of events that led to this critical encounter, as per KSLTV. The night's calm was punctured not just by the dual impacts but also by the ensuing flurry of activity as the men and women in blue worked tirelessly into the morning hours.
Little information on the pedestrian himself was available, while the police worked to ascertain his identity and perhaps, in the process, seek to understand how such an incident could unfold. "There were two other vehicles that also stopped because they witnessed what happened," a Sandy Police official stated. "As they were making their way to the pedestrian that was in the roadway, another vehicle who didn’t see the pedestrian in the road hit him again." as detailed by KSLTV.
