An attempted arrest on Friday afternoon in East El Paso escalated into a fatal officer-involved shooting, leaving a 39-year-old man dead, according to El Paso Police. The incident, occurring at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Larry Wadkins and Vista Del Sol, has rippled through the community, stirring a mixture of fear, understanding, and concern.
El Paso Police stated that officers were seeking to arrest the man on warrants for robbery when he reportedly brandished a weapon. In response, the police fired their guns resulting in the man's death, as reported by KTSM. Meanwhile, no specific information about the weapon supposedly drawn by the man has been released to the public as of yet. The El Paso Police Department's Crimes Against Persons unit, along with Internal Affairs and the Texas Rangers, have initiated investigations into the shooting, as per El Paso Times.
The narrative unfolding in this residential corner of East El Paso has left locals grappling with mixed emotions. Elizabeth Montelongo expressed her anxiety saying, "I just feel nervous and scared because you never know what's going to happen when you're going down the street," as noted by KFOX14. Autumn Banks reflected on the unexpected nature of such events, expressing sorrow for the family of the deceased, "That is not something you expect to see on any day, but definitely not the weekend," as detailed by KFOX14.
Another layer of sentiment was shared by residents who, despite the tragic loss, resonated with the danger police face and the difficult decisions they must make. "If he's bringing up a weapon, then it's because he's prepared to shoot and to shoot even the police," one El Pasoan stated. They continued, "I guess the police are doing what they needed to do to protect the neighborhood." Another neighbor added their voice, acknowledging the difficult situation while sympathizing with the officers involved, "I mean, they have family and people that love them, so I hate that that happened, but I hope that the officers did what they thought was best in that situation, because they have family too, that they have to protect themselves from," as obtained by KFOX-TV.
