Residents of Wailuku on Maui experienced disruptions Friday night as the Maui Police Department shut down Mill Street, from Lower Main Street to Imi Kala, owing to an ongoing police investigation. The closure was due to the discovery of a stolen vehicle potentially related to an improvised explosive device (IED) incident in Pukalani the night before, as reported by Maui Now.

According to a statement obtained by Maui Now, the Wailuku Patrol officers were quick to respond to the situation at around 8:30 p.m., Friday, in light of the recent IED incident, they conducted evacuations of nearby residences as a safety measure, residents were asked to be patient and comply for their own safety. Commuters found themselves advised to find alternate routes as the street closure impacted traffic, as first reported by KITV.

After exhaustive investigations the vehicle was ultimately deemed safe and not connected to the IED incident from Pukalani, lifting a palpable tension from the shoulders of Wailuku residents. The roadways were reopened at around 10:57 p.m., allowing the evacuated residents the relief of returning to their homes, as clarified by police statements to Maui Now.
