In an effort to put a spotlight on the importance of pedestrian safety, particularly as schools swing back into session, Mesa's own public figures, including Mayor John Giles and various council members, teamed up with an array of colorful mascots yesterday morning, August 14, to lend a hand to the city's crossing guards. The initiative, which comes courtesy of the joint efforts of Mesa Public Schools and the City of Mesa's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, aims to promote more conscientious road habits among both drivers and pedestrians, according to the City's official website.

This year, the roster of local notables who participated, donned the crossing guard's signature safety vests and took up the responsibility of ensuring safe street crossings. Among them were Baxter the Bobcat, the Arizona Diamondbacks' mascot; council members Mark Freeman from District 1, Julie Spilsbury from District 2, Jenn Duff from District 4, and Alicia Goforth District 5; Forest Smith, Mesa's Assistant Fire and Medical Chief; Dr. Andi Fourlis, Superintendent of Mesa Public Schools; high school mascots Spunky and Spirit Mustang as well as Tommy Toro; and Wayne Drop, the "Water – Use It Wisely" campaign character.

"We're thrilled to have had such enthusiastic participation from our local public figures," RJ Zeder, City of Mesa's Director of Transportation, was quoted as saying in a press release. He added that their involvement "helped to amplify the importance of street safety for all road users of all ages, and we are confident it has made a lasting impression on the community."
