The streets of Miami Beach are set to celebrate the influential women who have left their mark on the city, with the Miami Beach City Commission unanimously deciding to name 13th Street after Cuban American Singer Gloria Estefan. Citing a Local 10 news release, the stretch of road between Meridian Avenue and Ocean Drive will soon bear the name Gloria Estefan Way.
In September 2023, the Women’s Commission of Miami Beach proposed renaming a street to honor Gloria Estefan, recognizing her impact on music and her community. As a Grammy-winning artist and long-time resident who co-owns the Cardozo Hotel with her husband Emilio, Estefan was a fitting choice. Her legacy was celebrated by the commission.
Adding further to her 2024 honors, Gloria Estefan was featured in a Lummus Park Exhibit during Women’s History Month that showcased "Ten Women Superstars" of the entertainment industry. "These women have defied conventions, shattered barriers, and left an indelible mark on the music industry," Lynette Long, who chairs the Miami Beach Commission for Women, told Local 10.
Commissioner Kristen Rosen González emphasized the significance of these recognitions when she highlighted that only one other street in Miami Beach was named after a woman, Barbara Capitman, before this initiative took root, according to CiberCuba News. Before the new street names take effect, they need approval from a county commissioner and the county commission. Gloria Estefan’s career, business, and philanthropy will be honored as part of Miami Beach’s history, now marked on the map.
