This past Saturday, Miami-Dade streets, usually busy with daily commutes, were overtaken by street takeovers under the moonlight. According to Local10, law enforcement clamped down on these illegal displays of automotive acrobatics leading to arrests and vehicle impoundments.
In the operation's crosshairs were Jake Ross, 22, and Jose Espinosa, 19; both now face charges with Ross's escapades ending behind a barred facsimile of freedom—arrested after losing control and introducing his white Chevrolet Camaro to a stationary fence in Broward County. Espinosa, nabbed some hours earlier, is accused of participating in several of such events evidenced by videos circulated on Instagram, witnessed by detectives where the roar of engines is only rivaled by the cheers of a crowd that disperses into the night upon the police's arrival.
The Miami-Dade Police Department's Homeland Security Bureau and the City of Miami Police Department worked jointly in the operation that eventually penned down Ross and Espinosa, with the former also attempting to flee the scene and resist an officer, while the latter faces an additional reckless driving charge, as reported by NBC Miami. The operation yielded two vehicles impounded and a slew of 13 citations served.
The authorities urge those with information pertaining to these activities to assist in the crackdown, offering a veil of anonymity through Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers reminiscent of a community working in tandem while precariously balancing the scales of engagement and enforcement. Anyone wishing to contribute is encouraged to call (305-471-TIPS).
