After a tense multi-day search in Allendale County’s unforgiving wilderness, Jessica Rapsys, the 27-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Florida who had been reported missing, was found safe on Friday morning. A multi-agency effort that included the Allendale County Sheriff's Office, SLED, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the Department of Energy Savannah River Site Security Services culminated in her discovery. In a statement obtained by WBTV, Sheriff James Freeman expressed his relief, "Finding Jessica was a team effort. We all worked together and did not, give up hope."
Rapsys, whose ordeal began when her car was found abandoned with the keys still inside on private property belonging to Creek Plantation, was located in an area still reeling from the effects of Tropical Storm Debby. According to details released by authorities and reported by ABC7 Chicago, the vehicle was warm on discovery, suggesting that it had not been abandoned for long.
Despite the intense heat and recent storms, Rapsys' main issue seemed to be a series of bug bites, according to law enforcement. Fortunately, an ambulance leaving the area around 10:45 a.m. indicated a successful rescue, as reported by WBTV.
The ordeal has come to a close with Rapsys being taken to a local medical facility for evaluation and any necessary treatment. "The Rapsys family would like to extend their deepest thanks to everyone who helped find Jessica, and respectfully asks for privacy at this time," a statement from SLED said, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
