James E. Johnson, a 20-year-old man, has been slated to face attempted murder charges for his involvement in a shooting incident on I-40 West, which dates back to Valentine's Day, 2023. This serious charge stems from an event where he allegedly engaged in an armed confrontation, firing shots at another vehicle after an initial collision on Donelson Pike. This information comes from a recent announcement from the Metro Nashville Police Department.
The altercation reportedly escalated following the collision. Both Johnson and the occupants of the other vehicle—a 31-year-old man and a female driver—pulled into a nearby convenience store. It was there that Johnson and the male passenger had a physical altercation. The pair then left the scene in a Hyundai Santa Fe, only to be followed by Johnson onto the interstate where he is alleged to have not only fired upon them but also rammed their vehicle with his SUV, resulting in a crash. According to the Nashville government's official site, "Johnson is also accused of using his vehicle to ram the victim’s SUV which crashed on the side of the Interstate. The passenger sustained critical but not life-threatening injuries."
Johnson later faced arrest after purportedly shooting his sister during an argument in a separate incident. This led to him being detained, where he's remained incarcerated with his bond set at a substantial $416,000. The charges he garnered from the February 2023 shooting include attempted homicide, aggravated assault, as well as gun possession during the commission of a felony, as detailed by official sources.
