A Nashville community is reeling after a recently released sex offender, identified as 27-year-old Deontez Drew, carried out violent attacks on two women within less than 12 hours of each other. According to the local authorities, Drew was released from Hardeman County jail only to be detained again, now facing charges that include attempted aggravated rape and especially aggravated kidnapping in one instance, and attempted criminal homicide in another. A Nashville judicial commissioner set Drew's bond at $800,000 following these events.
The first reported assault occurred at 3 a.m. on a 23-year-old woman who was walking home from work. As the victim passed under a railroad overpass, she was attacked by Drew who threatened her with a knife and attempted to drag her to an alley. In an act of brave composure, she convinced the assailant to let her go, which provided her a moment to escape and call the police. Drew, explaining that he had "just gotten out of jail" and didn't want to return, momentarily let down his guard, allowing the victim to run to safety.
Just hours later, at approximately 2 p.m., Drew struck again. This time, the victim was a 39-year-old woman whom Drew attacked with a wooden baseball bat after posing as an Uber Eats delivery person. This assault took place in the hallway of the woman's Pine Street apartment building. Drew struck her in the face and head with the bat and stole her cell phone before she managed to scream and alert other residents. Her injuries were severe enough to necessitate transport to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.
Witnesses responding to the victim's screams observed Drew fleeing the scene. One vigilant resident pursued him and kept sight, enabling police to apprehend Drew while he was attempting to hide under a car near Laurel Street and 11th Avenue South. Officer Kelly Turcios spotted the suspect emerging from his hiding place and proceeded with the arrest.
