Healthcare is set to take a significant leap forward in Bronzeville with the planned opening of a new health clinic at 467 E. 31st St., a site steeped in the area's medical history. The forthcoming Bronzeville Health Center, a $10 million project announced by Cook County officials, aims to directly tackle health disparities in Chicago's South Side when it opens its doors in early 2025.
The center will reportedly offer a range of services including family medicine, mental health care, and various rehabilitation services."The Health Center holds the promise not only of addressing the immediate health need, but also fostering long-term improvements in health outcomes on Chicago's South Side," Preckwinkle told Block Club Chicago. The clinic is estimated to serve an impressive 85,000 patients in its first operational year.
Cook County Commissioner Bill Lowry praised the focus on mental health services, acknowledging the significant gap in such services since the 2012 closure of multiple city-run facilities. "Mental and behavioral health care is a right — not a privilege; it’s a right," Lowry emphasized in a statement obtained by Block Club Chicago. This sentiment resonates with past issues, particularly in the aftermath of policy decisions by former Mayor Rahm Emanuel and funding challenges under Gov. Bruce Rauner that left many mental health services unfunded.
Dr. Erik Mikaitis, interim CEO of Cook County Health, outlined the comprehensive nature of the care to be provided at the new facility. "The Bronzeville Health Center will provide primary care for children and adults, management for chronic conditions, pregnancy care, extended physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy services," as stated by the Chicago Sun-Times.
