The University of Notre Dame has decided to suspend its men's swimming program for the upcoming academic year due to an investigation that uncovered a widespread gambling issue among the team members, a violation of NCAA rules. The announcement, which came brisk and with little forewarning, was first detailed in a report by Sports Illustrated and subsequently confirmed by FOX59. These findings have prompted the university to enforce a hiatus on the program to address and reassess the prevailing 'cultural dynamic' within the team.
Notre Dame's Vice President and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics, Pete Bevacqua, expressed in a statement the gravity of the team's conduct, "While individual conduct varied, the overwhelming cultural dynamic on the team necessitates a full suspension." This decision has allowed team members, including incoming freshmen, the chance to transfer before Notre Dame begins classes on August 27, though the women's swim team and the men's and women’s diving teams are not affected, reports FOX59.
The men's team also faces the potential of NCAA sanctions which could follow student-athletes to new institutions, as outlined by a CNN report. According to Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde, unnamed sources allege that several student-athletes on the men's swimming team created "effectively created its own sports book for the purpose of wagering on their swimming performances." NCAA legislation, updated in June 2023, explicitly mentions permanent loss of eligibility for student-athletes engaged in activities that influence game outcomes or participate in betting on their games.
The recent turmoil within the swimming program adds to a decade of upheavals at Notre Dame, with multiple coaching changes and issues overshadowing the program's achievements. Notably, the team had just celebrated their highest finish in program history at the 2024 ACC championships before this scandal broke. According to an article by Sports Illustrated, Notre Dame's leadership sees the suspension as a reaffirmation of the university's values and a signal of its commitment to upholding integrity within its athletic community.
