A tragic incident unfolded early Friday morning on Interstate 805 in the city of Chula Vista, resulting in one fatality and leaving two others with major injuries, according to official reports. 10News detailed that the collision involving a white Toyota Camry occurred roughly 10 minutes before 7 a.m. near the H Street/E Street & Bonita Road exit.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Daniel Ralph indicated that for reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle struck the base of a freeway exit sign. One person was discovered dead at the scene, their relationship to the car unclear, while two other occupants were extracted from the wreckage and transported to a hospital. Both sustained major injuries, but the severity of their conditions has not been disclosed. "It is unknown if the deceased individual was ejected from the car", Ralph told 10News.
FOX 5 San Diego reported that following the initial collision, the Camry was seen ablaze in the northbound lane of Interstate 805 at Telegraph Canyon Road. Witnesses and good Samaritans attempted to push the fiery vehicle out of the traffic lanes, with early accounts suggesting that someone was still inside the car.
As the authorities continued investigating the cause of this deadly crash, CHP noted that the two right lanes just north of Telegraph Canyon Road were closed around 7 a.m., causing traffic delays. Cleanup procedures and the investigation are expected to keep the presence of emergency personnel on the scene for several hours. While the events leading up to the crash remain obscure, the CHP San Diego Area office requests that anyone with information contact them at 858-293-6000.
