Houston residents near the TPC Group chemical facility were briefly put on notice as the company contended with an operational hiccup that led to intermittent flaring yesterday. The alert, which was issued just before the 11-hour mark, was intended to keep those in proximity to the southeast Houston plant informed, ensuring any concerns about safety could be somewhat allayed, as reported by FOX26 Houston.
However, the real cause behind this event was a power outage, brought about by a thunderstorm that swept through the area, leading not only to the flaring but also to the emission of black smoke, which soared into the sky early at around 10:45 a.m., as per the emergency alert, details shared by Houston Public Media. TPC Group, with a considerable history stretching back over 80 years, assured the public that the flaring was not expected to negatively affect employees, the surrounding community, or industrial neighbors, yet the incident certainly turned heads and raised questions regarding industrial safety practices and protocols.
TPC Group's rapid response to the situation granted some reprieve as they declared an all-clear by the afternoon at exactly 2:25 p.m., asserting that, "Our Operations team worked safely and swiftly to resolve the situation and restore power back to the site," a statement obtained by Houston Public Media.
