Early Friday morning, Sacramento commuters on southbound Interstate 5 faced significant delays after a series of incidents involving an overturned big rig and a separate car fire. According to KCRA, a big rig carrying hay overturned around 4:13 a.m. near the Sutterville Road offramp, though fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident caused all southbound lanes to be closed for a time, creating a major bottleneck for early morning traffic.
The California Highway Patrol stated that while the lanes have since been reopened, a car became fully engulfed in flames further down the road, causing further congestion. California Highway Patrol units were to be dispatched to the fiery scene shortly after 5 a.m. As a quirk of timing, these events led traffic to only slowly improve as crews worked to fully clear the incidents over the ensuing hours. Adding to the disruption, KCRA reports that the freeway endured severe congestion due to both the initial spill and the subsequent vehicle fire, causing major delays for commuters. Traffic was funneled to the right shoulder as cleanup crews and emergency services dealt swiftly with the array of obstructions.
For those still planning their morning commute, CBS Sacramento urges drivers to consider taking alternate routes such as Highway 99 to circumvent the area, although this will likely add some additional travel time. "Drivers should expect significant delays through the morning," reminded law enforcement, encouraging locals to plan accordingly and seek out alternate pathways around the southbound I-5. As the situation develops and normal traffic patterns begin to resume, continued updates from California Highway Patrol and traffic news outlets are anticipated to keep Sacramento area drivers informed on conditions and potential detours throughout the day.
