The Salt Lake City Police Department's Gang Unit has taken into custody a 19-year-old suspect linked to a recent shooting incident in the Glendale neighborhood. The investigation was triggered by a 911 call received around 10:45 PM last Saturday, alerting authorities to shots being fired near the intersection of Concord Street and California Avenue, resulting in a 55-year-old woman sustaining serious injuries inside her home, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.
SLCPD officers, upon their arrival, pieced together that two individuals had approached the residence and opened fire, with at least one bullet piercing the walls and wounding the woman inside. She was later transported to the hospital by paramedics, where her injuries were deemed serious but not life-threatening. Detectives from the Gang Unit swiftly took over the case, piecing together leads and pointing them toward the suspect they were chasing.
On Monday, detectives succeeded in locating the suspect, Apisai Matelau, subsequently arresting and booking him into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The culmination of sustained and meticulous investigative work by the Gang Unit, with the statement adding that the unit enhances public safety by working proactively and collaborating with various partners. The department, however, has not disclosed any additional details about the case following Matelau's arrest.
