The Salt Lake City Police Department is launching a proactive approach to assist those experiencing homelessness, emphasizing a compassionate and comprehensive support system. The push by the department's Community Connection Team (CCT), which got underway on July 21, 2024, has already reached out to more than 90 individuals over the past month, providing them with essential information on community resources available to assist them with food security, substance abuse programs, housing, and more. As reported by SLCPD, The CCT's concerted 30-day effort, represents a larger commitment by the police department to engage with the city's most vulnerable and address intersecting social issues such as poverty, mental health, and addiction.

These outreach initiatives are a part of SLCPD's recent drive to enhance patrols in the Liberty Park area, stemming from heightened community and public safety concerns. By focusing on outreach, the department is aiming to strike at the heart of the complex challenges faced by those without shelter. Each interaction undertaken by the CCT is meant to fortify connections between the SLCPD and those it serves, prioritizing humanity and compassion, a stance that Salt Lake City has upheld throughout its efforts to tackle homelessness and related social problems for many years. Future efforts to extend this outreach are on the horizon, demonstrating a continuous commitment to community engagement.

SLCPD's initiative isn't just about temporary fixes but aims to foster a safe environment where personalized care and long-term support are accessible. Through collaboration between the department’s CCT and Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), they form co-responder units that integrate social services and law enforcement. Officers and licensed clinical social workers work side by side to ensure a holistic response to those in crisis. The department seeks to promote transparent interactions, and build and strengthen relationships, while also bolstering open communication channels that support mutual respect and dedication to solving community issues, as detailed by the SLCPD.

In addition to on-the-ground outreach, SLCPD is working to educate the public on the correct ways to report crimes and concerns, notably those related to homelessness and community hazards. This includes emergencies, which can be addressed by calling 9-1-1, and non-emergencies which can be handled through the department's hotline at 801-799-3000. The department has also set up a convenient mySLC platform where concerned citizens can report encampments, hazards such as needles or biohazards, and other homelessness-related concerns. More information on these services and the Community Liaison Officers is available via the SLCPD's website.
