Riverton is rolling out its first-ever Cougars Street Hockey League this fall, a beginner-friendly program for kids in grades 2 through 5 that comes with a stick, a jersey, and two tickets to a Utah Mammoth game. The league runs from September 21 through October 28 at Riverton City Park, with registration priced at $50 per player.
How the League Is Structured
According to a post from Riverton, Utah - City Government, games will be held on Mondays for grades 2-3 and Wednesdays for grades 4-5, with all games scheduled between 5 and 8 p.m. The city directs interested families to register at rivertonutah.gov/hockey. The league uses a beginner-friendly 3v3 format designed to introduce young players to the sport without the cost or complexity of traditional ice hockey.
The games take place on the tennis courts on the northeast side of Riverton City Park, at 1452 W. 12600 South, according to Riverton City. It is a familiar move for the city, which regularly repurposes its municipal tennis courts for non-tennis community sports including pickleball, mini-golf, and cornhole. The recreational format also keeps things low-pressure: no scores or standings are kept, and each scheduled game is preceded by a 20-minute practice session, per the city's program page.
Momentum From a Summer Camp and Past Events
The fall league's launch follows directly on the heels of a three-day Riverton Street Hockey Camp held this week, from Monday through today, for kids ages 8 to 12 at the same city park courts. The $30 camp offered stick-handling and game drills for beginners and returning players alike, the city's recreation page notes, providing a direct on-ramp into the new league.
This is not Riverton's first hockey collaboration with the Utah Mammoth. The city hosted a free street hockey clinic at Riverton City Park in August 2025 and a 3v3 street hockey tournament in June 2026, with past winning tournament teams receiving tickets to Mammoth home games. Part of a Statewide Youth Hockey Push
Riverton's league fits into a much greater regional effort. Utah Mammoth Youth Hockey has launched similar street hockey leagues and clinics in communities including Sandy, Eagle Mountain, Vineyard, Brigham City, and Sugar House, according to Utah Mammoth Youth Hockey. Nearby Herriman City folded a similar clinic into its own programming this month, integrating a free Utah Mammoth Street Hockey 101 session into its Safety Fest at J. The Utah Mammoth franchise itself is still young. The team officially revealed its permanent name, logo, and identity on May 7, 2025, after playing its inaugural 2024-25 NHL season in Salt Lake City as the Utah Hockey Club, according to Wikipedia. The franchise was established in April 2024 after acquiring the hockey assets of the former Arizona Coyotes, giving Riverton's new youth league a direct tie to the state's first major professional hockey team.
