Tragedy struck the waters of Lake Michigan on Tuesday as a 17-year-old from Eagan, Minnesota went missing while swimming amidst rough conditions. Indiana Department of Natural Resources officials have been actively coordinating a search effort for the teenager, who was last seen approximately 300 feet from the shore near Beverly Shores.
According to WISH-TV, Porter County 911 received a distress call around 2:10 p.m., reporting multiple swimmers struggling in the water. Large waves hindered rescue efforts, preventing timely intervention. Two swimmers and a Good Samaritan were found onshore, all requiring medical attention, and transported to a stable hospital.
The unfortunate culmination of the search came on Thursday when, as reported by WTHR, Indiana Conservation Officers recovered the body of the missing teenager. At the time of the incident, a Beach Hazards Statement had been in effect, with waves forecasted to reach heights of 6 to 9 feet, indicating a perilous situation for swimmers.
As three different people in need of medical aid, the 17-year-old's absence cast a shadow over the scene as reported by Bring Me The News, fellow swimmers, and rescue teams sought in vain to defy the lake's conditions to find the teen.
The local authorities are still investigating the specific circumstances surrounding the teen's disappearance to piece together the sequence of events that preceded the tragic event.
