A shooting outside a Camby Walmart in early June, which resulted in the death of an Indianapolis man, has been deemed a self-defense act by local authorities. The Hendricks County Sheriff's Department, after concluding their investigation into the incident, discovered evidence supporting the shooter's claim of self-defense, as reported by FOX59. Subsequently, the prosecutor decided not to file charges against the shooter, a 19-year-old male whose identity has not been disclosed.
Upon deputies' arrival at the scene on June 2nd, they encountered 34-year-old Matthew Steele with a torso gunshot wound near a vehicle in the parking lot, as provided by information from IndyStar. Having been transported to IU Health Methodist in critical condition, Steele later succumbed to his injuries. Initial reports indicated a verbal and physical altercation between Steele and the 19-year-old prior to the gunshot being fired.
Despite the lack of criminal charges, not all voices agree with the outcome. 13News reported that Steele's fiancée, speaking out for justice, desires charges to be filed against her fiancé's shooter. Legal experts, including Indianapolis attorney Daniel Vaughn, explained to 13News, that under Indiana law, "if I believe that I'm trying to prevent a forcible felony against myself or another person, preventing serious bodily harm, then I can use a reasonable level of force, up to deadly force, so it can be allowed, yes."
The fiancée, who is not opposed to gun ownership, expressed a belief that age restrictions could play a pivotal role in such scenarios. She told 13News, "I think it would have gone way differently. If another grown adult and him would have gotten into it, they would have fought like grown men and not just shot." When asked for further comment on the decision not to press charges, the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office remained silent, while the community waits for the final investigation report with the family grappling with loss and unanswered questions.
