A Smith County woman has been indicted following an investigation into her son's shooting death earlier this year. Trena Roberts, aged 49, is facing one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated assault after a grand jury reviewed the case involving the death of her son, 21-year-old Theodore Taylor. According to a WSMV report, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) alleged that Roberts instigated an assault by her son against two men, which led to Taylor being fatally shot on January 30, 2024, at a property on Rawls Creek Road in Gordonsville.
Roberts was taken into custody on August 7 and is currently held in lieu of a $40,000 bond. The Smith County Jail confirmed her booking following the indictment. As detailed by WKRN, the TBI's inquiry suggests that Roberts's actions directly precipitated the confrontation that resulted in her son's death, turning a domestic dispute into a criminal tragedy.
The specifics of the altercation and the subsequent shooting have not been publicly detailed. However, reports indicate that the grand jury found enough evidence to charge Roberts with influencing her son to wield a deadly weapon in an assaultive manner. In a statement obtained by FOX17, the TBI claimed one of the men involved in the altercation "recklessly" killed Taylor, leading to the charges against Roberts.
No information regarding an attorney representing her, or a possible plea, has been disclosed as of yet.
