Southport Mayor Jim Cooney's decision to remove Police Chief Tom Vaughn from his position has rippled through the local community, sparking a mixture of speculation and tension. On Tuesday, Cooney announced that Vaughn was terminated from his role as the city's head of law enforcement, stating a desire to steer the Southport Police Department on a new course. As reported by FOX59/CBS4, Cooney asserted that the state statute endows him with the authority to dismiss a police chief, and emphasized the legality and necessity of his actions.
Amidst these unfolding events, Deputy Chief Nate Williams assumed the interim chief role, while Vaughn was relegated to the rank of reserve patrol officer. IndyStar reported that Vaughn, previously respected for leading the department through the tragic loss of an officer and other challenges, refuted Cooney's reasoning and highlighted his firing as suspiciously close to a grievance he filed against the mayor.
Cooney's insistence on accessing a series of documents concerning the department's reserve officers precipitated Vaughn's firing, as the ousted chief stood firm in his conviction that such records were confidential. Addressing his termination, Vaughn told FOX59/CBS4 that the mayor overstepped his bounds, indicating a 2014 ordinance which vests the Board of Public Works and Safety with the power to discharge the police chief.
The Board, which comprises five members including Mayor Cooney himself, is expected to convene this Wednesday evening and may address or possibly overturn the dismissal. They were yet waiting for the documents that might clarify the situation, leading to a heightened sense of uncertainty. "It's frustrating to me and to be honest, it angers me because I put 11 years of blood, sweat and tears, and long hours to turn a police department that was non-existent into what it is today," Vaughn expressed in a statement obtained by FOX59/CBS4.
With the upcoming meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety and the interim leadership of Nate Williams, the future of the Southport Police Department hangs in the balance.
