In a scene not typical for political gatherings, George Bardmesser, a City Commission candidate for Sunny Isles Beach, faced charges after a confrontation at a local Cuban restaurant turned violent. The 59-year-old attorney and author was arrested after allegedly attacking two teenagers during a campaign event at El Tropico Cuban Cuisine. According to 7News, footage shows Bardmesser putting one teen in a chokehold and hitting the other.
Despite the recent charges, Bardmesser was present at a city council meeting shortly afterwards, starkly avoiding the topic of the incident. Bardmesser's response to the press was curt, with him telling Local 10 News' Rosh Lowe, "Not right now," when approached after the meeting. Local 10 News also reported the candidate being 'testy' at both the public meeting and during his bond court appearance, although he was granted bail shortly after his arraignment.
The troubling event occurred in the presence of incumbent Commissioner Fabiola Stuyvesant, who was accompanied by her children and the two involved teens—both wearing her campaign shirts. The altercation disrupts what was intended to be a congenial platform for discussing civic ideas, raising concerns about civility and the boundaries of political rivalry. Pedro Vera, owner of El Tropico and a witness, expressed his dismay to 7News: "You just can’t take out your aggression on kids."
Bardmesser, now facing two counts of child abuse without great bodily harm, finds his campaign punctuated by legal implications and public scrutiny. The immediate response by law enforcement and subsequent judicial actions reflect the severity of the allegations—Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer set a $5,000 bond for Bardmesser and issued a stay-away order. Reflecting on the incident, one of the teens recounted to Local 10, "When he was choking my friend, he let go of my friend and he slapped me in my face."
As the case unfolds, the community of Sunny Isles Beach watches on, weighing the implications this event may have on local governance and the quality of political engagement. Though Bardmesser has not publicly addressed the charges since his arrest, his attendance at the commission meeting sends a clear signal that his campaign is not yet conceding amidst the turmoil.
