A young man's life ended in tragedy, and now months later a suspect faces charges for his death. The Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of Jamariel Johnson, 23, in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Decarlo Horton. The altercation, tied to an attempted sale on the OfferUp platform, occurred on February 25 in Lauderdale Lakes, as NBC Miami reported.
Authorities located Horton suffering from gunshot wounds in the 3700 block of North Pacific Breeze Circle, according to a statement obtained by NBC Miami. After being transported to Broward Health Medical Center, the teen sadly succumbed to his injuries. Johnson, identified later by detectives, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder and, held without bond as of today.
The investigation that led to Johnson's arrest was detailed by Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman in a statement. "Detectives eventually identified Johnson as the shooter and discovered that the shooting resulted from an OfferUp exchange involving the sale of a watch," Grossman explained, as Local 10 News reported. The suspect remains in Broward County Main Jail following his arrest yesterday.
While Johnson's apprehension marks a significant development, the case remains open. Officials encourage anyone with additional information to contact BSO Homicide Unit Detective Steve Novak, or to submit tips through the SaferWatch app. Anonymous tips are also welcomed, via Broward Crime Stoppers online, or by calling or texting their hotline. These efforts, aim to piece together the events that led to the tragic loss of Horton during, what was meant to be, a simple transaction between locals, according to Local 10 News.
