Earlier today, a considerable law enforcement presence, including SWAT teams, descended upon the WoodSpring Suites in Tamarac after a man had barricaded himself inside the hotel, sparking fears for the safety of the hotel's occupants and surrounding community. NBC Miami reported that deputies were called to the 5700 block of Madison Avenue around 6 a.m. this morning, and crisis negotiators were on the scene attempting to de-escalate the situation.
As the incident unfolded, the Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed the identity of the man as 28-year-old Courtney Toddman, who had made threats against himself and possibly others, the officers and a SWAT team quickly responded and talks with Toddman, spanning several hours ensued while the perimeter was secured and an evacuation of the area took place for safety measures, according to information obtained by CBS News Miami.
Communications between law enforcement and Toddman were described as tense and prolonged; nevertheless, they proved to be successful. At approximately 12:45 p.m., the Broward Sheriff's Office reported that Toddman was taken into custody.
Officials have not released details regarding whether Toddman was armed, nor the specific nature of the threats that prompted the evacuation of the surrounding area still, the resolution of the incident was reached without any reported injuries or further incident, reflecting a coordinated response by multiple law enforcement agencies that answered the call in Tamarac today.
