An "unknown substance" prompted the closure of a segment of Rockville Road on Indy's west side, as drivers were directed to steer clear of the stretch between the train bridge and Country Club Road. As reported by WISH-TV, the Wayne Township authorities issued an advisory following the discovery of dark material covering the roadway, with images posted to social media illustrating the scene and cleanup efforts in progress.
Wayne Township Fire Department, alerting the public around 4 p.m., advised against travel through the affected area of Rockville (U.S. 36) and Country Club Road, while the hazardous material teams embarked on sampling and identifying the peculiar substance, a process inclusive of the Indianapolis Fire Department decontamination team, the police department, IEMS, Marion County Health and Hazmat, and the Indy Department of Public Works. This was after the westbound Rockville was shuttered due to concerns over this substance. FOX59 detailed the response and the ongoing road closure.
Further reassurances came as the fire department pronounced, "There is no large threat to public health," easing the minds of residents and those in proximity to the enigmatic substance, which was likened to a "solid, dirt-like substance" in a CBS4 Indy article.
Amidst the unfolding situation, westbound Rockville Road remained closed for additional hours while tireless crews worked determinedly to clear and restore the roadway to a functional state, with the Wayne Township Fire Department indicating at 5:13 p.m. that this segment would persist in closure as the cleanup pressed on, as per FOX59's follow-up reporting on the thoroughfare's status and the expected continuation of the disruption for commuters.
